Local to National: The Santa Barbara Women’s Political Committee

Founded in 1987 by UCSB political science professor Gayle Binion, Antioch College Associate Dean Lois Phillips, and Susan Rose, the Santa Barbara Women’s Political Committee (SBWPC) has been one of California’s most active local feminist organizations — and a consistent voice for ERA ratification at the federal level.

SBWPC past President Luz Reyes-Martin captured the stakes plainly: “The fact that we don’t have constitutionally protected equality affects every aspect of women’s lives.” The organization has worked to close the gap between public assumption and legal reality — noting that many Americans mistakenly believe women already have constitutional equality.

The SBWPC’s ERA advocacy has taken multiple forms over the years:

• In July 2021, SBWPC hosted “The ERA in 2021: Where Are We Now? & How Do We Cross the Finish Line?” — a public forum featuring Wendy Murphy of Equal Means Equal, the lead attorney in a First Circuit Court of Appeals case attempting to compel the U.S. Archivist to publish the ERA.
